Why should I purchase specific Diving Accident Insurance?

Diving is considered a safe activity, however, when something goes wrong, medical expenses can reach thousands of dollars. A specific diving accident insurance policy will cover for hyperbaric chamber treatments, medical evacuations and much more. Such expenses may not be covered under your health care program, especially when you are outside of your country.

Why do I need a dive-travel insurance policy?

Your diving accident policy will cover your diving related medical expenses, such as hyperbaric chamber treatments, you may incur other non-diving medical expenses, trip cancellation and interruption expenses, and much more.  A dive-travel insurance policy will protect you against such unforeseen scenarios.

How do I choose the right travel policy?

Different insurance policies offer different levels of coverage, so it is important to review the full terms and conditions of the policy you are going to purchase. It may seem that all travel policies offer similar coverage, however, when reviewing the fine print you will find out that coverage may be very different, and by understanding the different policies you will make sure to purchase the right program for your needs. Here are some examples of what you should look for in your travel insurance policy:

  • Expertise in diving related emergencies and hyperbaric medical procedures.
  • Primary vs. secondary coverage. Primary coverage includes admission guarantees, fast claims process and much more.
  • Option for direct payment to service providers.
  • Deductibles.
  • Covered reasons for cancellation/interruption, and coverage limits.
  • Covered reasons for lost activity (diving) days.
  • Coverage for loss/replacement of diving gear.

What to do in case of an emergency

Your policy offers 24/7 emergency assistance through a hotline. Be sure to have this number available. Also, be sure to carry your proof of insurance with you. You can call the emergency help line for assistance even if your case is not a medical emergency and you simply require travel assistance due to an interruption, delay and more.

Do I need both a diving accident program and a travel insurance program?

When going on a diving vacation outside your country of residence you should purchase a travel insurance program, single or annual-multi-trip. If you are only diving while traveling and plan on one vacation you should get a single-trip travel program, however, if you are going on more than one trip this year, consider the multi-trip program to cover all trips outside your country of residence. Our travel programs include coverage for diving and non-diving related injuries. Please note that our travel insurance plans will only cover you while diving and traveling outside your country of residence.

If you dive locally (within your country of residence) you should have an annual diving accident program to cover all of your diving activities. This coverage is valid worldwide but will only cover you in case of a diving related injury.

How to choose between annual multi-trip to single-trip coverage?

A single-trip travel program will cover you for one specific trip, diving or a non-diving trip. An annual multi-trip travel program will cover you on any number of diving or non-diving trips throughout your year of coverage. Programs include coverage for diving and non-diving related medical expenses, emergency medical evacuations, hyperbaric treatments, trip cancellation, trip interruption, missed connection, baggage loss and much more.

Should I buy general travel insurance vs. dive-travel insurance?

General travel insurance may cover your trip adequately, however, it will not include lost diving days, missed liveaboard departure and more.

When is the right time to purchase dive-travel insurance?

Be sure to purchase travel insurance as soon as you put down the first deposit for your trip. This will protect your investment.
