I recently encountered a question from a diver who dives once a year when he goes on vacation with his dive buddy. The diver was frustrated with the fact that he only needs diving accident insurance for 4 days, yet it seemed to him that he’ll need to buy an annual program and pay over $100 for it. This was true up until a few years ago. Regardless of how many days, or how many times you dive throughout an year, your only options were to pay for a full year of coverage.

A few years ago DiveAssure started offering short-term diving insurance. Coverage wise, it’s the same plan that one would buy for a year, however, you only pay for the actual days that you want to be covered for. If you are going to Mexico to dive for 6 days, you will pay less than $50 for full diving accident insurance.

You should note however that short-term coverage is only worth it if you don’t need coverage for more than 7-10 consecutive days. If you are going to cover 2 separate diving activities that do not fall within the same 7-10 days, you should consider an annual plan, as the rates for two such periods will be very close to what you would pay for 1 year, and if you ended up with an annual program, maybe it’ll encourage you to dive more…
